Hi, I'm a Jindo dog. Never heard of me? That's okay, not a lot of people have in America. I'm only recognized by the American Kennel Club as Foundation Stock Service since January of 2008. I come from the island of Jindo in Korea and in 1962, the Korean government deemed me precious enough to protect me under the Cultural Properties Protection Act. Imagine that! A dog breed is considered a National Monument!!
Being a National Monument is a big responsibility, but so is being in charge of one. I am not a dog for beginners. If you are considering bringing me home, make sure you have time to spend with me and do your homework. There are a lot of us in shelters, especially on the west coast, probably due to a lack of patience.
I'm an interesting dog. I am extremely loyal, maybe more so than any other dog. In fact, there's a story on the island of Jindo about Baekgu, the Jindo dog that was born and raised on Jindo, then sold to a new owner about 200 miles away from the island. Baekgu ran away from her new home and turned up at her original owner's home seven months later, nothing but skin and bones, but happy as a clam. The original owner decided that it was best to keep her and she lived the rest of her life there. There is now a statue of Baekgu on Jindo in her honor. Suffice it to say that the Jindo's first priority is to be with his or her loved one(s). So please make time to spend with me. If I'm left alone, I will find things to do on my own, and that may not coincide with the plans that you have for your house or furniture. Do you get my drift?
But, being that loyal should not necessarily be looked upon as a detriment. I am also very in tune to what my humans are feeling. I can be a very good watchdog and guard dog, if that's what you are looking for. I have been known to be fiercely protective of my loved ones and have been reported to kill coyotes that have come too close to my home, so you don't have to train me for those purposes, it's inbred. Be careful of my contact with strangers and other animals because I might mistake them for prey.
Speaking of which, I am a brave hunter. I was bred to hunt wild boar and deer and I am only one of three dogs that have been known to hunt tigers. If you had a few of my brothers and sisters and you took us hunting, it's been said that you could be woken by one of us one morning to be led to a deer that we have taken down for you. How easy is that??
However, when in a family environment, I am a very loving and affectionate dog. I can be a lot of fun too! I am super energized and will do really well at playing and running. I LOVE to be outside, but don't leave me out there alone, because I'll get lonely and climb a tree or hop a normal fence and go wandering. That's why you should have at least a six-foot fence to keep me contained and for gosh sakes, keep me leashed on walks.
I can shed a lot, especially twice a year, just like those darned huskies. I also have unique eating habits like the husky and can be quite picky. I am proud to say I'm part of a super-smart breed and while that presents unique challenges in training, like challenging you for the alpha position in the house, I will learn quickly if trained with love and affection and forever be your very loyal and very loving friend and protector.
